Beit Tulun, Sayeda Zeinab, Cairo
Egyptian-French photographer Ayman Khoury is showing a new series on the Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Tulun at Beit Tulun, next to the mosque, as part of the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF). "TULUN Mosque" opens on Sunday 25 October at 6pm and runs until Sunday 1 November.
The festival describes the 9th century building as the oldest mosque in Egypt still standing in its original form. Khoury's pictures look at its plain lines and small details, and set them beside photographs of Sufi dhikr gatherings. Art direction is by Mariam Korachy and executive direction by Mariame Makhyoun. This is the first edition of the show, held with Beit Tulun.
On Tuesday 27 October at 7pm, Beit Tulun also hosts "Architecture of the Soul", a panel discussion on how the mosque shapes daily life and the sense of place in the streets around it.
The exhibition opens daily from 6pm to 10pm on its listed dates, according to the festival. D-CAF has not listed an entry price for it, so check the event page on d-caf.org before you go. Beit Tulun sits beside the mosque in Sayeda Zeinab.
