North Coast steak truck Sear opens for good at The Drive 2 in New Cairo
Sear Stk., the steak truck that spent the summer at Hacienda Red and Playa, now has a permanent spot at The Drive 2 in New Cairo, with tenderloin, Denver steak and steak-trim burgers.
New Cairo has a new steak spot, and it comes with a summer of practice behind it. Sear Stk., the steak truck that popped up on the North Coast this summer, has moved into a permanent home at The Drive 2, bringing its casual, eat-on-the-go take on steakhouse food back to the city.
Sear is the work of Ahmed Ghoneim, who worked in fine dining kitchens in the UK during his university years, mostly in steakhouses, and won on the TV show Million Pound Menu. He has said the idea came from the steak he saw served in paper-lined trays at British Christmas markets: in Egypt, steak was something you sat down for, and nothing filled the gap in between. The concept took three years to develop and launched this summer out of a truck at two North Coast spots, Hacienda Red and Playa, billing itself as Egypt's first dedicated steak truck.
The menu stays short and built around steak. Two cuts lead it: tenderloin, which Ghoneim calls the signature, and a Denver cut, a less familiar steak more common in the United States. Both come with skinny or thick fries, or in a sandwich, either on brioche toast or as a thick Japanese-style sando. The burgers are ground from steak trimmings rather than a separate blend, and there are mini burger "coins" for anyone who wants more than one. On the side: truffle Parmesan fries and a baked mac and cheese with a crisp top. Sauces include chimichurri, peppercorn, Cafe de Paris and an avocado and Greek yoghurt dip, and a winter line-up is in the works.
The move puts Sear among a growing cluster of casual food spots at The Drive, the dining strip by The Waterway in New Cairo, where brands that start as summer pop-ups or delivery kitchens increasingly settle.
Sear Stk. is now open at The Drive 2, New Cairo. Prices, opening hours and a phone number have not been published yet; the brand's Instagram is the place to check before you go, and if you liked the truck on the coast, expect the same short menu, now without the drive to Sahel.
