The General Authority for Roads and Bridges said on Friday that its engineers inspected the whole of the University Bridge over the Nile after posts on social media said parts of its sidewalks were damaged.

The authority said it found small areas of surface wear in the sidewalk concrete, which it put down to rainwater collecting around drains that had been paved over in earlier works. It said this does not affect the safety of the bridge and that the structure is generally sound.

A specialist company has been assigned to carry out full maintenance of the sidewalks, the asphalt, the expansion joints and the metal railings. The bridge, which links Giza and Manial, opened in 1957 and is one of the older Nile bridges whose upkeep moved from the governorates to the authority.
