Egypt's tourist e-Visa costs $30 for a single entry and $65 for multiple entries, and you apply for it online on the Egypt e-Visa Portal at visa2egypt.gov.eg, run by the Ministry of Interior. The portal asks you to apply at least 7 days before you travel. You pay by card, receive the approved visa by email, and show a printout of it to the immigration officer when you land.
Who can apply
The portal lists the nationalities that can use it, among them the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and India. Check that your country is on the list before you start: the portal's FAQ says a foreign citizen generally has to get the e-Visa through the portal first before entering Egypt. If family are coming to see you in Cairo, send them the link early.
Fees
The portal lists one visa category, Tourism, in two forms. Single entry costs $30. Multiple entries cost $65. The fee is paid online by Visa card, MasterCard or another debit card, after you have entered your details. The portal does not publish how long each visa stays valid, how many days you may stay on each entry, or how long processing takes, so read the instructions on the visa type screen carefully before you pay.
Step by step
The portal sets out nine steps. 1. Create an account on the registration page with your email address and a few other details. 2. Confirm the registration from the email you receive. 3. Log in to the portal. 4. Choose Apply Now. 5. Choose the type of visa and read its instructions. 6. Fill in the application form. 7. Pay with a Visa card, MasterCard or other debit card. 8. Wait for the approval email, then download and print the e-Visa from your account. 9. Show the printed e-Visa to the immigration officer at the port of entry. You can come back to a pending application by signing in again. The portal is available in English, Arabic, French, Russian, Chinese, German, Italian and Spanish.
What to carry when you land
The FAQ lists what a traveller should have at the airport or port: a passport valid for at least six months from the day you arrive, a printout of the e-Visa, a travel itinerary, and, for tourists, hotel bookings or details of the places you plan to visit. For a business trip or a family visit, carry a supporting letter, such as a letter from your company or an invitation letter.
Before you pay
The portal notes that Egyptian port authorities can check an e-Visa in their own system, and that they keep the right to refuse entry to an e-Visa holder without giving a reason. Apply only on visa2egypt.gov.eg itself and keep the approval email and the printout together with your passport. If something goes wrong with an application, the portal has a Contact Us page.
