Meta has stopped TikTok and its parent company ByteDance from advertising on Facebook and Instagram in seven countries: the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. A company spokesperson confirmed the move on 8 October, and it applies straight away.

The ban also covers other advertisers running campaigns that link to TikTok in those markets. Meta said it does not have to run ads from a competitor whose aim is to pull people off its apps.

The step follows TikTok removing Instagram links from user profiles. For users in Egypt nothing changes in how either app works: the rule applies only to paid ads.
