Apple's new iMac gets the M6 chip in seven colours, no Egypt price yet
Apple has updated the 24-inch iMac with its M6 chip, Wi-Fi 7 and up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports. It starts at $1,499 in the US and arrives on 6 November; Egyptian prices are not out yet.
Apple has refreshed its colourful 24-inch iMac with the new M6 chip, the same chip family it introduced this week in the 14-inch MacBook Pro. The company announced the update on 27 October, with orders opening on 28 October in 35 countries and regions and the first machines reaching Apple Stores and authorised resellers on Friday 6 November. Apple has not published an Egyptian price or a date for Egypt.
The outside barely changes. The iMac keeps its thin aluminium body and comes in seven colours: blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver, each with a keyboard and mouse or trackpad in the matching shade. The screen is still the 24-inch 4.5K Retina display, at 500 nits, with an optional nano-texture finish on the higher model to cut reflections.
Inside is where the news is. The M6 has up to a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, two more cores of each than before, with what Apple calls Neural Accelerators built into every graphics core and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says it runs on-device AI tasks up to five times faster than the M4 iMac and graphics up to twice as fast; these are the company's own test figures. Memory bandwidth goes up to 170GB/s, and Apple says the storage reads and writes up to twice as fast.
Connections are better too. The iMac moves to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, has up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports (all four on the 12-core model) and can drive two 6K external screens. The 12-core model also gets 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet and Touch ID on the keyboard as standard. The 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, six speakers and three microphones stay. It ships with macOS 27, which brings Siri AI in beta; Apple lists English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish for it, not Arabic.
In the US, the 10-core model starts at $1,499 and the 12-core at $1,699. On the morning of 28 October, Apple's Egypt website still showed the M4 iMac, with a "Find a retailer" link and no price in pounds. Egyptian prices are set once stock reaches the authorised resellers, so do not count on a dollar price converted at today's rate. If you are buying an iMac now, check that the one on the shelf says M6 and not M4, and ask the shop when the M6 stock is due.
