Egypt ranks third in Africa on the WEF's 2026 tourism index
Egypt is 63rd of 110 countries and third in Africa, behind Mauritius and South Africa, in the World Economic Forum's Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026.
Egypt has placed 63rd out of 110 countries in the World Economic Forum's Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026, prepared with Zurich Insurance Group, Egypt Independent reported on Saturday, citing the African business agency Ecofin. That makes it third in Africa, after Mauritius (59th) and South Africa (61st).
The index does not count tourists or tourism revenue. It scores the conditions behind travel, using 102 indicators grouped into five areas, from safety, infrastructure and air transport to visa policy, prices, digital services, tourism resources and sustainability.
According to the same report, the areas where Egypt still has room to improve are service quality, simpler procedures, more hotel rooms, the overall visitor experience, sustainability and air connections.
The ranking does not change anything for visitors or residents straight away: ticket prices, visa rules and opening hours stay as they are. It is a yardstick the tourism sector watches, and the gaps it points to, from hotel capacity to flights and service, are the ones people planning a trip or hosting guests in Cairo would notice first.
