Prices of locally made phones in Egypt up about 55% since January
The head of the mobile phone division says the cheapest phone on sale now costs about EGP 7,000, up from about EGP 4,500 at the start of the year.
Phones made in Egypt cost about 55% more than they did at the start of 2026, according to Mohamed Talaat, head of the telecoms and mobile division at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce. He said prices have been rising in steps of 5% to 7% every 10 to 20 days rather than all at once.
Talaat said the cheapest phone on the market now costs about EGP 7,000, compared with about EGP 4,500 in January. He blamed higher prices for memory chips, which a small number of global makers control, as demand from AI and data centres grows. Imported phones carry duties and fees of around 38.5% to 40%.
He added that more buyers are repairing old phones rather than replacing them. No official price list covering the whole market has been published.
