What the street is
The street is named after the Fatimid Caliph al-Muizz li-Din Allah, who first laid it out and who ruled Egypt from 969 to 975 AD. It has carried many names over the centuries and has been called al-Muizz since 1937. The ministry calls it the largest open-air museum of Islamic monuments in the world, and it is part of Historic Cairo, which joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
It runs between two gates of the old city walls, from Bab al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuwayla in the south, and crosses old lanes such as Amir al-Guyush Street, Darb al-Asfar, Borgowan Alley, Khan al-Khalili and al-Ghuriyya. Along the way stand 29 monuments, from the Fatimid period of the 10th century to the Muhammad Ali dynasty of the 19th: mosques, schools, houses, markets and defensive gates. Shops, stalls and craft workshops line the street between them.
Opening hours
The ministry lists the same hours for every day of the week, Sunday to Saturday: 9am to 5pm. Bayt Al-Suhaymi and Bab Zuwayla keep the same hours.
