With daytime highs around 30 degrees, autumn is the easy season for a museum day in Cairo. These five cover Pharaonic, Islamic and modern history. Prices and hours are taken from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities website and the museums' own pages.

1. Egyptian Museum, Tahrir: the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, known for its Pharaonic collection, including the Narmer Palette and statues of the pyramid builders. Open daily 9 am to 5 pm, last ticket at 4 pm. Egyptians 30 pounds (students 10), foreign visitors 550 pounds (students 275).

2. Museum of Islamic Art, Bab El Khalq: next to the National Library, known for carved woodwork, ceramics, rare manuscripts and a Mamluk key to the Kaaba. Open daily 9 am to 5 pm, last ticket at 4 pm. Egyptians 20 pounds (students 10), foreign visitors 340 pounds (students 170).

3. Gayer-Anderson Museum, Sayeda Zeinab: two joined Ottoman-era houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, furnished in the old style and filled with the collection of Gayer-Anderson Pasha. Open daily 9 am to 5 pm, last ticket at 4 pm. Egyptians 10 pounds (students 5), foreign visitors 100 pounds (students 50).

4. Manial Palace Museum, Manial: a royal-era palace known for its mix of Islamic architectural styles and its gardens. Open daily 9 am to 5 pm, last ticket at 4 pm. Egyptians 60 pounds (students 20), foreign visitors 220 pounds (students 110).

5. National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Fustat: known for the Royal Mummies Gallery, alongside its main and textile galleries. Open 9 am to 5 pm, last ticket at 4 pm, with an extra Friday evening session from 6 pm to 9 pm. The museum's visit page does not list prices; tickets are sold through its official booking page. The nearest metro station is Mar Girgis.
